“He adopted a role called being a father so that his child would have something mythical and infinitely important: a protector.” _Tom Wolfe.
It’s always easy for one to have a good bonding with his mother, but when it comes to fathers, it can get a lot more complicated. Yet, there are countless fathers out there who are literal superheroes for their kids. Fathers who take actual interest in the life of their child, helping them grow as an individual and reach their goals. So today, on this prestigious occasion known as Father’s Day, I shall be talking about the most amazing fathers to walk the anime verse.
5. Tomomi Masaoka (Psycho Pass)
With years of experience and being an outclass detective, Tomomi was a very well-respected Enforcer. His laid-back attitude and often accepting things as they were, weren’t always accepted by his son Nobuchika Ginoza, who shared the same line of work.
Tomomi served as a quasi-father figure for the other team members, often Goin gout of his way to help them outside of work. Tomomi and his son’s relationship wasn’t always the best of a kind, especially since they held different ideologies, with Ginoza often showing open hostility and wasn’t always grateful. Yet, Tomomi always stuck around and tried to give a helping hand.
Spoiler Alert!
In his last moments, while battling the notorious Shogo Makishima, he didn’t care about the mission to capture him or about his reputation, he only cared about the safety of his son and wanted to see him grow up to be happy. On his deathbed, Tomomi could only marvel at how much his son had grown and the similarity they both had, before finally closing his eyes with a warm smile. (I’m not crying, you’re crying!)
4. Paul Greyrat (Jobless Reincarnation)
Ah yes! A father-son relationship like no other. Paul Greyrat and Rudeus have had quite the bonding since Rudeus first reincarnated as his son. Paul has displayed perfectly what an idol father should be like (not count him cheating with the maid).
Along with pampering his son with almost every type of love and support, Paul also trained him in mastering the arts of the sword and self-defense. Their cheeky talk about girls and Paul bestowing upon his son the secrets of “how to win a girl over”, just shows the close relationship the two have; looking more like best friends than a father and son.
Teaching his son the value of money, Paul arranges a job for him, when Rudeus asks if he could pay for the education of his friend Sylfie and himself. It doesn’t come to us as a surprise when we see Rudeus taking his father’s side and joking around with him on multiple occasions.
After losing his wife and kids in the teleport incident, Paul fell into depression and drowned his sorrows in alcohol, making Rudeus not recognize his once strong and jolly dad, which led to a fight between the two. Later on, they make up, with Paul having the guts to apologize first, showing us yet again how Paul is willing to risk anything, even his ego, for his family.
3. Maes Hughes (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood)
Okay, here come the tears and the heartbreaks. Lovable is an understatement for this man and father. Goofing around and making the life of each and everyone so much better was what made him such a fun and lovable character.
Maes Hughes was all about his wonderful wife and beautiful daughter. Having endless stories about them, he had driven all his teammates nuts, especially his favorite comrade, best friend, and closest supporter, Roy Mustang. With always pictures of his wife Gracia and three-year-old daughter Elicia in his wallet, Maes made quite the nuisance of himself by constantly bragging about them to every other person he met.
His murder served as the major starting point for the story, both for the Elroc brothers and Mustangs thirst for vengeance. His final words were without a doubt, a sincere apology to his wife and daughter, for not staying in the world longer.
2. Bols (Akame ga Kill!)
Was Bols a good person? Well, that argument is debatable since he had too many corpses in his closet for that. But was he a good father? You can bet your lucky stars, he sure damn as hell was!
Don’t be taken aback by his muscular body and scary mask, or the flame thrower that he carried around. If not for his job of burning villages and killing a mass group of people, Bols was actually a pretty decent and loving guy. Due to him having incinerated many villages, he believed that one-day karma would come for him to hit. And it did.
In the few scenes where he got to spend some time with his family, what we witnessed was not a ruthless murder, but a completely different person. Someone who actually valued his family more than life itself. Often going to them for emotional support whenever he felt down, Bol felt bitter regret, knowing that he would no longer be able to embrace his wife and daughter ever again.
- Naruto Uzamaki (Boruto)
The countdown wouldn’t have been complete without someone who actually values knowing that he is there for his children, even though his parents weren’t. Boruto may not know or even understand it, but Naruto is a pretty amazing father. I mean we all have seen Naruto grow up and reach the level where he is now.
Even though Naruto never really knew what it’s like to have parents since both of them died when he was just a baby. It’s obvious that he does his best to set his children down the right path, even if it means sometimes exposing their faults and shortcomings.
Being the Hokage is a demanding job and it’s not possible for Naruto to be near his kids all the time, not to mention he is almost single-handedly responsible for world peace. Yet, he makes time to attend all the big events for his kids, (he sometimes sends shadow clones to do the job). No matter what Boruto might say or think, Naruto is a great dad and it won’t be until Boruto grows up to fully understand the responsibilities of the world and how his father handled it all alone.
