The anime world is full of a diversity of shows, with tons of fantastical characters and action-packed storylines. However, as entertaining as they are, these shows are also a rollercoaster of emotions. Ecstasy, pride, misery, agony, and rage – you will feel it all! Today we will share with you some of the most emotional transformations in anime history.
Goku Gains the Ultra Instinct Form (Dragon Ball Super)
In the Tournament of Power, Son Goku seems to be grasping at straws despite having unleashed his all at Jiren from Universe 11. As a seemingly last attempt, he unleashes a gigantic blast of energy (which kept growing because of him and Jiren) that he is unable to control and it explodes with Goku in the center. All of Goku’s friends and family watch in horror, while his many adversaries rejoice, and Goku does not return to the bleachers. A huge crater results from the explosion but the hero is nowhere to be found. Hushed whispers spread throughout the stadium, as the Universe 11 group sat with heavy hearts.
Suddenly Goku reappears, his eyes a steely grey, and an enormous amount of energy being released from him. He seems oddly calm and begins to fight neck and neck with Jiren; prior to this, he had been overpowered with ease. Whis and Beerus realize Goku has gained the Autonomous Ultra Instinct form, an ability that was only achieved by the strongest of gods. All the deities present are shocked that a mortal is able to attain such power. Goku and Jiren’s fight continues as Goku’s comrades smugly look on at their friend. The awakening of a new technique when all hope seemed lost definitely earned a deep sigh of relief.
Naruto Baryon Mode (Boruto: Naruto Next Generations)
Boruto, Sasuke, and Naruto are up against Isshiki, who is far stronger than any of them. Landing devastating blow after devastating blow on the father-son duo and Sasuke, the three are at their wit’s end, trying to fight back. Beat and fatigued, all hope seems lost and all their endeavors are fruitless. All of a sudden, Naruto appears in a new form – Baryon Mode. Baryon Mode appears to be more powerful than any other form Naruto has as of yet, packing a harder punch and also improving his reflexes tenfold.
Things begin to look up as Isshiki is pushed back at long last. This new weapon in Naruto’s arsenal, though, is a two-edged sword. While the most spectacular power-up was that Naruto could knock down his opponent’s lifespan, his own lifespan decreased at the same time. At the edge of your seat and with bated breath, you can only watch as Naruto’s life dwindles before your eyes. This faithful battle in which our favorite heroes get thrashed, a reduction in Naruto’s lifespan as the ultimate sacrifice, is definitely one of the most moving scenes in the many, many, episodes of this epic series.
Ken Kaneki Becomes a Ghoul (Tokyo Ghoul)
Ken Kaneki is the teenage protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul. Tokyo is infested with human-eating ghouls, who can blend perfectly into human society. When Kaneki goes on a date with Rize (a female ghoul), an accident leads to her organs being transplanted into him. Kaneki becomes a part human and part ghoul half-breed. Exhibiting many ghoul qualities, he is no longer able to consume human food and instead craves human flesh. However, Kaneki refuses to eat fellow humans, to let go of his humanity.
A mental manifestation of Rize awakes within him and constantly tries to tempt him into embracing his inner ghoul. His subsequent internal struggle to avoid succumbing to his ghoul instincts is horrendous and terrifying as he is pulled into a world of human-consuming monsters who seem to stop at nothing in order to get their sustenance. Perhaps the final straw is Kaneki’s battle to stop himself from preying on those whom he calls his friends. This is undoubtedly one of the most psychologically disturbing transformations ever to be made.
Junpei Yoshino Transforms into a Curse (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Itadori Yuuji rushes to Junpei’s school to find him using his cursed technique, seeking revenge on all of the people at his school. While Junpei tries to avoid confrontation, Itadori is determined to save him and take him to Jujutsu High. Unbeknownst to him, Mahito is behind Junpei’s rampage, determined to use the boy in order to fulfill his own goals. Out of the blue, the curse itself appears in the hallway and turns Junpei into a curse using Idle Transformation.
Itadori watches, helpless, as Junpei transforms into a grotesque creature. Shaken and terrified, he is unable to do anything as his transformed friend begins to attack him, leaving him no choice but to fight against Junpei and eventually kill him, as Mahito looks on elated, enjoying the show. Perhaps the most painful aspect of this scene is Junpei’s appearance laughing alongside Itadori in the Jujutsu Tech uniform in the opening theme of the show, which never actually ended up happening. Curse you MAPPA!!!
Nina’s Transformation into a Chimera (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Nina Tucker is a four-year-old girl who just wants to play and is best friends with her Great Pyrenees, Alexander. Shou Tucker, her father, in order to save his State Alchemist certification, merges Nina and Alexander to form a chimera, capable of understanding and communicating in a human language. When Edward and Alphonse realize who the chimera is actually supposed to be, the two are shocked and heartbroken.
An enraged Edward then assaults Tucker, who goads him by saying that he and Edward are the same – they would take a chance even if they have to break the rules in the process. Finally, Edwards lets him go when Nina, even in chimera form, pitifully pleads for her father’s safety, unable to comprehend what he had done to her. Later, Alphonse apologizes to the young girl, turned chimera, for being unable to turn her back, while Nina still does not understand what is happening and simply asks for them to play together. Turning one’s own innocent infant daughter into a monster, this transformation is without a doubt one of the most heart-wrenching anime moments in existence.
